Joy Reyes

Joy Reyes is a very giving person who has focused her life on helping others.

Her parents taught her, “If you don’t take a step to change things, nothing happens.”

Her professional work reflects this attitude; she spends 60 hours a week working to change lives as the Executive Director of the Columbus Literacy Council. She also employs this attitude in her personal life by volunteering as an administrator and teacher at her church, La Cosecha Latina (Latin Harvest), 20 hours a week.

She is eager to be an active member of Altrusa, as it would give her an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals interested in service and to broaden her knowledge of what is needed in our community.

Joy is very grateful to her parents for supporting her in earning a quality liberal arts degree from Denison University, where she majored in biology and Latin American studies. She uses the skills she learned at Denison on a daily basis. In particular, she has found her Spanish language skills to be most beneficial.

The broad foundation of the liberal arts education helped Joy move forward with streamlining Council functions in 2009. She and another staff member created a plan to restructure the organization by revising the class curriculum and incorporating stronger volunteer support. They implemented a curriculum that taught functional life skills to help students survive in the community. As an example, they taught students how to communicate with a landlord or read a prescription. With this model, the Council was able to double the number of students served, increase the success rate on assessments and track 220,000 hours of donated volunteer time.

In her personal time, Joy spends time with her best friend and husband, Daniel.

Joy and Daniel live in Pickerington with their dog, Brownie.
