Altrusans have been supporting the monthly Good Behavior Gatherings at the Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility (SJCF) for the last 18 months. Altrusan volunteers have supplied materials for activities (cosmetics, craft items, games and additional food items) for the girls for the night and spend quality time with them. The work is highly-rewarding for volunteers and provides a professional role model for the girls to emulate. Future fundings could be used for activities such as visits from the Wildlife Center, local author readings, book club materials, writing materials, inspirational speakers and instruction materials for life skills and coping. Altrusans across the country participate in the literacy activities of Make a Difference Day, combining their efforts to make an impact. The organization has won a national award from USA Today for its involvement with Make a Difference Day. This year, Altrusa International of Columbus, Ohio, will make a difference in the lives of people who are staying at the YWCA Family Center by reading books to children, playing games with them and letting them select books to keep. Since 2005, Altrusa of Columbus has partnered with the National American Miss Pageant. Participants collect stuffed animals and books as a service project. The club receives thousands of animals and books and distributes them to community centers throughout the year.
Altrusa International of Columbus, Ohio, began support of an ASTRA club at The Ohio State University three years ago. The organization also awards scholarships through the Critical Difference for Women program at the university, supporting the educational efforts of non-traditional women who are returning to school, and uses funds to assist an international student attending OSU.
